| Bihar : Protest Moves against POTO |

In Bihar widespread protests have been held against promulgation of POTO. A Convention was held on 23rd December, 2001 at Mahesh Prasad Singh Science College in Muzaffarpur town which was attended by over one hundred people from different walks of life. The Convention was presided over by Com. A.P. Singh and inaugurated by veteran cultural activist Ramchandra Rahabar of IPTA. The veteran cultural activist said that in the name of curbing terrorism, the Govt. is actually targeting revolutionary and progressive forces beside Muslims. Speaking on behalf of CPI(ML)-ND, Com. Manoj Misra said that after December 13 attack on Parliament, NDA Govt. expected the opposition to POTO to die down so that it could enact it as a law. Com. Shiv Kumar Gupta, a panchayat samiti member of Majouli Khetal, spoke on how Indian Govt. is trying to malign nationality struggle of Kashmiri people and Nagas as terrorism. Kusheshwar Prasad Verma of MCPI called for unity of all progressive forces to fight the danger posed by POTO. Ram Singer Singh of CPI(M) criticized POTO as a black ordinance and a conspiracy by NDA Govt. to crush opposition. The main speaker, Com. Prakash Das of CPI(ML)-New Democracy, said that the biggest terrorists are the imperialists and reactionaries. In the name of global war against terrorism, US imperialists are committing most heinous terrorist acts against the people. On 5th December a Dharna was organized by Jana Abhiyan near Patna junction. The participants of Jana Abhiyan who participated in the Dharna included CPI(ML)-New Democracy, AIPRF, CPI(ML)-Ekta Pahal, Jana Mukti Sangharsh Vahini, Communist Centre of India and Janwadi Lok Manch. Participants were addressed by Com. Prakash Das of CPI(ML)-New Democracy, Com. Sachidanand Prabhat of AIPRF, Com. Arvind Sinha of CPI(ML)-Ekta Pahal and others. Speakers called upon all revolutionary, democratic and progressive forces to build up a movement to defeat POTO. |
