VHP and Bajrang Dal tried to foment communal trouble over the elopement of a Muslim boy and Hindu Brahmin girl in Lalpur Bhatkura village in Allahabad district in UP. They threatened the Muslims of the area that their houses will be wiped out. Under the leadership of Com. Suresh a team went to the area to enquire into the incident and talked to the people of the area. The boy and girl were neighbours and friends for a long time. Their plans to marry were known to the whole village for last 2-3 years. The father of girl is in the police and works in another district. The father of the boy is a govt. employee while his uncle works in postal dept. Five Muslim houses of this family are in the village and rest of the houses are of Brahmins. Due to the increasing tension in the area members of the family of the boy ran away from the village. Police apprehended his uncle and relatives from nearby villages. Police abused and threatened the Muslims of the area. When the boy and girl could not be apprehended, local landlords started holding meetings in the area. VHP leaders from the city also became active. An attempt was made to rally all the Brahmins of the area. They rejected the argument as to what other families had got to do with this issue? Slogans were raised to kill the boy and girl and attack all the Muslims of the area. Muslims were afraid even of lodging complaints of the coming danger. The poor people of the area were fearful of the rallying of landlords. CPI(ML) conducted wide propaganda against the designs of VHP-Bajrang Dal and against the attitude of the police. Along with some other organizations from the city a demand was raised to protect the lives and properties of Muslims and stop the proposed VHP-Bajrang Dal demonstration. Another team went from the city on August 18. Landlords of Lalpur had declared that they would kill the boy and girl. Police had brutally beaten up the uncle of the boy. On August 19 the boy and girl were apprehended. The girl was handed over to the family and nine family members including the boy were arrested. Party made serious efforts that communal tension in the area do not increase and to foil the designs of Hindutva forces. It was surprising that self-professed champions of Muslims, SP and BSP, did not come forward. Probably they were waiting for a big incident after which they could utilize it for votes. Democratic people of the area are happy over the party frustrating the designs of Hindutva forces. Broader unity of the people is required to maintain communal amity and such forces can only be developed thorough struggles of the people. |
