Samalkha town observed a complete bandh on October 3 against steep increase in house tax and commercial taxes by Chautala govt. In the whole town, even hawkers and road side shops remained closed. Besides Samalkha, towns like Yamunanagar and Jagadhari also observed bandhs. In Samalakha this bandh was observed by "Save Samalakha Committee formed in a meeting held at the local Vishwakarma Dharmshala at the initiative of the local unit of CPI(ML)-New Democracy. Many political parties and mass organizations had participated in this meeting. Local associations of vegetable and fruit vendors, doctors and chemists, sweet shop owners, barbers and other shopkeepers had participated in the meeting. On October 3 a large meeting was held in Ramlila Maidan on the call of "Save Samalkha Committee". Initiating the meeting, District Secy. of CPI(ML)-New Democracy and Convenor of "Save Samalkha Committee" Com. P. P. Kapur said that this heavy tax burden by Chautala Govt. supported by the BJP has broken the backs of people. Earlier municipal committee of Samalkha used to collect 8 lakh rupees as taxes annually and now under the new taxes 1.5 crore rupees will be collected from Samalkha. Central and state govts., on the dictates of World Bank and WTO, are placing a heavy burden on the people while crores of rupees are being gifted to MNCs and big business houses. People will have to wage determined struggle against the policies of the rulers of selling the country and increasing the burden on the people. Others who addressed the meeting included ex-corporator Satya Prakash Garg, Harayana Vikas Party state youth wing president Surendra Ahlawat, local CPM secy. Inder Lal, former Corporation vice-president Jagat Prakash Beniwal, BKU leader Ram Kishan, NBS leader Mahendra Singh Biholi and Com. O. P. Sharma. After the public meeting a procession was taken out through main markets and GT Road industrial area and grain market. Demonstrators raised slogans against Chautala Govt. and expressed their resolve to fill jails but not to pay taxes. Over one thousand people participated in the procession. Due to IFTU's support to the Bandh, work in several factories too was affected. |
