On 1st October 2002, in response to the Central Committee call, Delhi Committee of the Party organised a March Against US Imperialism from Mandi House to American Centre. Activists and members gathered at Mandi House around 12 noon. Rousing slogans were raised and placards declared ‘No to US Aggression on Iraq’, ‘US Imperialism Quit Afghanistan’, ‘Sison is a Communist, US Imperialism is the terrorist’ and other such slogans. A large effigy of US Imperialism and a banner with a cartoon depicting US loot of third world, dominated the scene. As the march was about to begin Delhi police officers handed over a slip rejecting permission for the same due to Section 144. Due to the insistence of the marchers, eventually the Rally could walk through Connaught Place upto Tolstoy Marg where mass meeting and effigy burning took place. Speakers included Com. Aparna (Secretary, DC of Party) Dr. Mrigank (President NBS Delhi), Com Vikas (Gen. Sec., IFTU Delhi), Com. Poonam (Gen Sec, PMS Delhi). Com. Shankar conducted the meeting which ended by burning the effigy before the lunch hour crowd. Delhi Committee has especially condemned the arbitrary use of Sec 144 by the police against democratic movements in the city and demanded that Delhi police’s rights to impose Sec 144 in any area of New Delhi- where all the political centres of the country are housed - be curbed totally. It demanded of the Central Govt. that FBI office in Delhi be closed, US troops and military officers be thrown out of India and all joint military activities and exercises be stopped, Indian soil should not be used for any US attack anywhere in the world. Speakers pointed out that it was US imperialism which was terrorizing the world people and the chief threat to world peace. They mentioned the continued US troop presence in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the imminent war on Iraq, the activity against esp. revolutionary movements of Philippines, Colombia, Nepal, and other areas of Latin America. They condemned the US support to Israeli aggression on Palestine. Earlier, in preparation for the programme, wall writing was carried out in several areas of the city and pamphlets and booklets distributed. In the various industrial areas, evening rallies with effigy burning were held the previous week to involve wide sections in the anti US protests. |
