AIKMS Condemns Repression of Peasants in Unnao (UP)

UP committee of AIKMS has condemned the lathicharge and tear gas shelling by police on thousands of peasants in Kanhapur village, tehsil Sadar, Unnao yesterday. More than 15 peasants have been injured and several leaders have been arrested.

1144 acre land had been acquired by UPSIDA in 2002-03 and while the peasants were protesting inadequate compensation since then the state govt has fail to solve the problem. Yesterday when the UPSIDA officials and police began occupying the land and used JCB machines the peasants protested after which the police let loose its terror.

The above acquisition is 16 yrs old and after implementation of LARR 2013 this acquisition has become  void because more than 5 yrs have past without any development on the land. Clause 25(2) of the LARR 2013 states that if land has been acquired under the old act and more than 5 yrs have passed without possession being taken the acquisition will lapse. Also under Clause 102 of this act if no development has taken place for 5 yrs after possession the land shall be returned to the original owners.

AIKMS has severely criticized the anti-peasant attitude of Yogi govt and has demanded that the officials who attacked the peasants be suspended. RSS-BJP govt is continuously trying to uproot peasants and handover land, water and forests to MNCs and big builders. It is using religion to politically divert attention of the peasants while snatching their livelihood.

AIKMS has appealed to all farmers bodies to support the ongoing struggle of peasants in Unnao.
